Project Background:

Amidst growing environmental awareness, a major port decided to comprehensively renovate its steel structure facilities on the dock to comply with the latest environmental standards and enhance their aesthetic appeal. Traditional solvent-based steel structure paints, while offering excellent performance, posed threats to the environment and workers' health due to the release of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) during application. Therefore, the project team opted for water-based steel structure paint as the renovation material.

Project Overview:

The project encompassed multiple large steel structure facilities on the dock, including but not limited to cranes, trestles, guardrails, and steel frame structures of warehouses. Covering an area exceeding 50,000 square meters, it required an efficient, environmentally friendly, and long-lasting coating solution.

Selection of Water-based Steel Structure Paint:

After extensive comparisons and testing, the project team selected a high-performance coating system consisting of a water-based epoxy zinc-rich primer paired with a water-based polyurethane topcoat. The primer boasted exceptional anti-rust properties, effectively shielding the steel structure from moisture and oxygen to prevent rusting. The topcoat, meanwhile, offered excellent weather resistance, abrasion resistance, and decorative appeal, ensuring lasting beauty and protection.

Construction Process:

  1. Surface Preparation: First, the steel structure surfaces were thoroughly cleaned to remove grease, rust, and old coatings. Abrasive blasting or high-pressure water jet cleaning techniques were employed to ensure the desired surface roughness and evenness for coating application.

  2. Primer Application: Following surface preparation, the water-based epoxy zinc-rich primer was applied. Spraying or brushing methods were utilized to ensure even coverage of the entire steel structure surface. After the primer dried, necessary inspections and repairs were carried out.

  3. Topcoat Application: Once the primer was fully dried and cured, the water-based polyurethane topcoat was applied. Similar attention was paid to ensuring uniform coverage and achieving the desired decorative and protective effects.

  4. Inspection and Acceptance: Upon completion of coating, a comprehensive inspection was conducted to identify any defects such as missed areas or runs. Additionally, the coating quality was evaluated to ensure compliance with project requirements and relevant standards.

Application Results:

With the adoption of water-based steel structure paint, the steel structure facilities at the port dock underwent a remarkable transformation, not only enhancing their overall aesthetic appeal but also significantly improving their corrosion resistance and durability.
